Q

How does the podcast appeal to its target audience of women?

A
  • It has an all-female team which attracts more women by seeing a group they can identify with.
  • It airs at 11pm which is the time when most of its target audience would be finished with work/putting children to bed/etc.
  • Talks on current social/political issues relating to their gender (E.g. gender equality)
  • Shares stories that many women can connect to

Q

How has the rise in digital technologies affected the audience of LNWH? (2 things)

A
  • Makes it more accessible and attracts a wider audience outside of their target audience (which could push away older audiences who enjoyed the nicheness factor)
  • On-demand listening, people can hear it at any time and fit it into their own schedules.

Q

How does Livingstone and Lunt’s theory of regulation link?

A

now that more audiences are listening they may be restricted from talking on sensitive issues due to increased regulation in order to appeal to the masses - limiting freedom by protecting the mass audience

Q

How does Curran and Seaton’s theory of power and media work?

A
  • LNWH was made available at any time to appeal to a larger audience for a larger profit. Media producers were driven by the logic of ‘profit and power’
  • Could be argued that it was made available due to the rise in digital technologies
  • Media concentration limits creativity, variety and quality – The increased accessibility of LNWH to larger audiences has increased the regulation meaning they can’t talk about the sensitive issues they used to in detail
