A

Allowed California to enter as a free state. Divided the rest of the Mexican Cession territories into New Mexico and Utah. Ended Slave trade in D.C. Included a strict fugitive slave law. Settled a border dispute between New Mexico and Texas.

What was the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

A

Required all citizens to help catch African American trying to escape slavery. People who let fugitives escape could be fined $1,000 and jailed. They set up special courts. Suspects were not allowed a jury trail. Judges receive more money for sending someone away.

Dred. Scott and the Courts DECISION

A

Dred scott was a slave and when his owner was alive he was taken to states that did not allow slavery, when his owner died he filed a lawsuit for freedom. First the court ruled that he could not file a case because he was not a citizen, but property. They then stated that congress did not have the power to outlaw slavery and that the missouri compromise was unconstitutional.

Why were white southerners outraged by the north’s response to John Browns execution?

A

The northerners rung church bells in his honor, Southerners thought that, that was outrageous and they wanted to destroy slavery and the south along with it.

A

These states had more people to fight and more factories to manufacture goods.

Draft Problems in the North

A

People did not like that you could pay to not go into the army. A lot of people didn’t want to fight if they did not care about slavery. It became a rich mans war.

People did not like that if you had more than 20 slaves you didn’t have to fight. People with less resented this law. It became a rich mans war.

A

The confederacy was split into two. They were no longer to maneuver vital supplies between them and to troops.

A

Destroying everything useful. Sherman’s troops burned everything, destroyed everything like houses, fields, railroad tracks, livestock.

How did women’s roles change?

A

They took over jobs in the industry, farms and plantations. Some woman disguised themselves as men to go into war. They participated in war by being spies. Some became war nurses, and some helped wash clothes and supplies for the troops. Some did fundraisers for the war.
