Laryngeal System Flashcards
Where is the Larynx located?
In the throat, top of the trachea
What is the biological function of the larynx?
The Larynx is a protective organ that prevents foreign objects (food) from entering the airway.
It can also force air for a cough if foreign bodies are present
What is the speech function of the Larynx?

What is the Hyoid Bone?
It lies horizontally at neck level, the larynx appears to be suspended by the hyoid bone, it is a point of attachment for both laryngeal and tongue muscles
What is the Thyroid Cartilage?
The thyroid cartilage is the largest laryngeal cartilage and forms the front and side walls of the larynx
The front of the thyroid cartilage is the laryngeal prominence (Adams Apple)
Where is the Cricoid Cartilage?
It sits directly below the thyroid cartilage and immediately above the 1st tracheal ring
Where is the Arytenoid Cartilage?
On the back and top of the cricoid cartilage, look like 2 cloves of garlic
What is the epiglottis and where is it located?
The epiglottis assists in preventing food from entering the larynx during swallowing.
The epiglottis is a large leaf shapes structure attached to the thyroid cartilage just below the laryngeal prominence,
- The top portion of the epiglottis is free-extending to the root of the tongue
