LAP Flashcards
Musculoskeletal Pain
Pain that affects the muscles, ligaments and tendons, along with the bones
Causes: damaged muscle tissue, trauma, postural strain, repetitive movements, overuse and prolong immobilization
Common Sx: Pain, Fatigue, Sleep disturbances
Ancient Wisdom
“If there is free flow, there is no pain…”
Qi and Blood should flow through the body uninterrupted and continuously
The Zhang Organs w Qi movement
LU, HT, LIV (2), K
Lung disperses Qi throughout the body
Heart circulates blood in the vessels
Liver keeps the Qi circulating freely
Liver Qi promotes SP/ST digestive functions, circulation of fluids,
Kidney, the root of Yang warms Qi & Blood,
produces Yuan Qi to energize Zang-Fu
Mechanisms that disorder Qi and Blood
Exogenous factors Wind, Heat and Fire, Yang pathogenic factors Cold, Damp and Dryness Emotional disturbances Poor diet, physical trauma, animal bites Improper exertion
PAIN with HT disorders
(1-3)
‘…all kinds of pain, itching and sores are due to Heart disorder.”
Heart dominates Blood and Blood vessels
If flow is disrupted, message sent to Heart
Heart is the Controller of the Mind
Stagnation triggers message to Heart, PAIN is a response of the Mind
Heart is the Root Controller of the Zang-Fu
Organ disharmony or Emotions may lead to PAIN
LBP-Location & influence
Location: anywhere in the back region, including the buttock, below the the lower border of the rib cage, approximately at the level of BL 21
Bladder and Kidney channels strong influence

LBP-Ediology
Excessive physical work Excessive sexual activity Pregnancy and childbirth Invasion of External Cold and Dampness Overwork Inadequate exercise
LBP-Pathology ROCD SOQB K-def LIV-qi-s
Retention of Cold Damp
_Pain worse in AM, better with light exercise
_Pain relieved by heat, worse with cold and damp
Stagnation of Qi and Blood
_Severe, stabbing pain, worse with rest, better with light exercise
_Tender to touch, worse standing or sitting
Kidney deficiency
_Chronic backache, dull pain in bouts, better with rest, worse when overtired, aggravated by sex
Liver Qi stagnation
_Acute or chronic backache, affects spinal, sinews causing contraction, spasm, stiffness; from EMOTIONS

INVASION OF COLD AND DAMP Sx T P Tx
Acute or chronic backache worse in AM, better with exercise, better with heat; worse with cold and damp, large area of pain, feeling cold in lower back.
T: Thick white coating
P: Tight-Full especially in Left Rear position
TX: Expel Cold, resolve Damp, invigorate low back channels
STAGNATION OF Qi and BLOOD Sx T P Tx
Acute chronic backache slightly better with movement but worse with excessive exercise; pain in fairly small area, rigidity of back muscles, Hx of repeated bouts.
T: no change
P: Wiry, especially in Left Rear position
TX: Move Qi, eliminate stagnation, invigorate Blood and lower back channels,
KIDNEY DEFICIENCY Sx T P Tx
Hx of chronic backache, pain alleviated by rest, aggravated by exercise; aggravated by sexual activity for men; pregnancy and childbirth in women; weakness of lower back, feeling of cold low back, dizziness, tinnitus, weak knees
T: Pale, if Yin deficiency less coat
P: Deep and Weak
TX: Tonify and Warm the Kidney Yang, invigorate the channels of the lower back.
