Bi SYNDROME Flashcards

1
Q

Bi SYNDROME

A

“Bi means obstruction…it is due to a deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi and to the space between the skin being open, allowing the Wind-Cold-Dampness to ride the deficiency. Qi becomes obstructed by pathogenic factors, it cannot circulate, it stagnates, Qi and Blood congeal, and Painful Obstruction Syndrome develops.”

An ancient, most universal disease that affects everyone at one time or another

Q

Bi SYNDROME- ætiology

A

External factors—Wind, Cold, Damp, Heat
Excessive Physical Exercise
Overwork
Childbirth
Trauma
Emotional Stress
Internal Imbalance: blood stasis, retention of dampness and phlegm, injury to Qi and Blood or the antipathogenic factor

Bi SYNDROME-TYPE
行痹
痛痹
浊痹
热痹
A

Xing Bi Wind-predominant migratory
Migratory characteristic of wind, pain moves from joint to joint
Tong Bi Cold-predominant afflictive or very painful
fixed and congealing quality of cold prevails: severe, fixed pain, aggravated by exposure to cold; reduced mobility of joints
Zhuo Bi Damp-predominant lodged
lingering nature of dampness prevails, fixed pain, swelling of extremities, numbness of the muscles and skin
Re Bi Hot-painful obstruction febrile
heat, redness, pain and swelling of joints, fever, thirst, yellow tongue coat, rapid pulse. Existing problems turn into heat

Q

Bi SYNDROME-Bone Bi

A

BONE BI
Chronic, develops from any of the four other types
Persistent obstruction leads to accumulation of body fluids, turning into Phlegm, more stagnation
Extreme forms of Phlegm:
—Muscular atrophy, swelling, deformity of joint bones
—Leads to Blood stasis, complicating existing stagnation
Becomes an internal problem affecting Organs

Pre-Existing Factors
Deficiency of Qi and Blood
Phlegm in joints, bone deformities
Stasis of Blood
Liver and Kidney Deficiency

_ACCORDING TO DEPTH OF DISEASE
SPO
MPO
VPO
BPO
A

According to depth of disease:
Skin painful obstruction
Pathogenic factors obstruct the superficial aspects of the body; common symptom is reduced or lost sensation
Muscle painful obstruction
Pathogenic factors penetrate the muscle layer; soreness, muscle aches, stiffness and deeper numbness or paresthesia
Vessel painful obstruction
Changing from a Qi level to Blood level disorder; purplish dark areas and the pain will be of the cold type. Severe cases: gangrene may set in; may have aching pain along the whole channel
Sinew painful obstruction
Deep level penetration; inflexibility, stiffness, spasms or pain.
Bone painful obstruction
Deepest penetration; bone weakness and deformity

K-PO
A

According to disorders of the Yin organs:
Heart painful obstruction
Palpitations, anxiety, a heavy stifling sensation in the chest
Lung painful obstruction
Wheezing and a stifling sensation in the chest, SOB, Sx worse on exertion
Spleen painful obstruction
Weakness of limbs, hiccup, vomiting, nausea, and anorexia
Liver painful obstruction
Stifling sensation in the costal and hypochondriac regions; some feel a mass in epigastrium; poor sleep with a tendency to wake with a start
Kidney painful obstruction
Muscular weakness or atrophy of the limbs and weakness of the spinal column, difficulty standing for long periods or walking; some so weak that they are reluctant to get up

_DISTAL POINT PRESCRIPTION

A

USE OF DISTAL POINTS:
The more distal a point is along the meridian, the further up the channel is its influence
GB 34 affects the shoulder
GB 39 affects the neck
Distal points of related channels can be used according to correspondence of joints in upper and lower limbs
Shoulder=Hip, Elbow=Knee, Wrist=Ankle
