Frame Story
A story set within another story, normally told by the main or supporting character e.g Wuthering Heights
Flashback (Analepsis)
When author takes the reader out of the present moment and jumps into a earlier period of time in a characters life.
Chiasmus
The reversing of the order of words in the second of two parallel phrases or sentences e.g ‘Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair’ from Macbeth.
Exposition
Normally in the introduction, where it introduces the theme, setting, characters or background information.
Colloquialism
The way we all speak when in informal situations.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something about the situation that another character doesn’t know.
Foreshadow
An indication of a future event in the text e.g ‘Sleep no more’ from Macbeth.
Euphemism
An indirect word of expression substituted for one that is considered to be too harsh when referring to someone unpleasant e.g ‘Passed away’.
Cumulative Sentence
An independent clause followed by one or more modifyers.
