Litotes
A form of verbal irony which understatement is used to emphasise a point. It uses a double negative. For example, the weather isn’t bad today.
Imagery
The use of vivid description and figurative language, usually rich in sensory words, to create pictures or images in reader’s minds.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration of a rhetorical device or a figure of speech I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse.
In Medias Res
Latin roughly translated to “into the middle of things.” It describes a story that begins in the middle, at a crucial point in the action.
Irony
A situation with contrast between expectation and reality. The difference of what something is seen to be to its actual meaning.
Juxtaposition
Two things being placed together with a contrasting effect. For example, ‘all is fair in love and war.’
Malapropism
The mistaken use of an incorrect word in place of a word with a similar sound, resulting in a nonsensical, sometimes humorous utterance.
e.g. “allegory” instead of “alligator,”
Hypophora
A figure of speech when a speaker raises a question then answers it.Should students wear uniforms for school?
Isocolon
A structural similarity between lines according to words or syllables.
