Metaphor
A figure of speech where a word or phrase is applied to a thing or action which is literally not applicable.
(e.g. “It’s raining cats and dogs.”)
Metonym
An expression used as a substitute for something else that is closely associated.
(e.g. The term ‘the crown’ refers to the king or queen.)
Motif
A dominant or recurring idea in a text.
e.g. Christmas and tradition is a motif in A Christmas Carol.
Onomatopoeia
A word that describes a sound and mimics the sound of the object or action when it refers to when it is spoken.
(e.g. boom, clang)
Oxymoron
Two terms that contradict each other.
e.g. “Awfully good.”
Paradox
A statement that contradicts common sense, but might be true.
(e.g. “This is the beginning of the end.”)
Personification
Human characteristics applied to something non-human.
e.g. “Lightning danced across the sky.”
Polysyndeton
Repetition of the same conjunction used in a list.
e.g. “In fire and blood and anguish.” - An Inspector Calls
Point of View
A position or perspective from which something is considered or evaluated.

Zoomorphism
Assigning a person or event with animal characteristics.
e.g. “He’ll hunt you down and eat you alive.”
