Allusion
A reference to a person, place, thing or idea.
Anaphoric
The repetition of a words or words at the beginning of successive phrases or lines.
Archetype
A recognisable character, concept or object that is easily categorised.
Diction
The choice and use of words or phrases in a text.
Enjambment
When a phrase or sentence in a line of poetry continues into the next line even though the sentence isn’t finished.
Euphemism
A mild or ‘proper’ expression used to replace one that is harsh, blunt or otherwise offensive.
Eg: passed away instead of died
Foreshadowing
Hinting at, or setting up something,that will later be extremely important but doesn’t seem important at the time.
Linear
Moves forward in time chronologically.
Motif
A recurring symbol.
Non-linear
May jump from different times, characters etc.
Oxymoron
A phrase made from two or more words that actually have opposite meanings.
For example: alone together, deafening silence, seriously funny, etc.
Parallels
Setting up two characters, situations, settings or ideas to be parallel to one another, reflecting each other but having different outcomes.
Pathetic fallacy
Human feelings and emotions reflected in nature.
For example: the friendly sun.
Pun
A humorous play on words.
For example: I’ve been to the dentist so many times I know the drill.
