Alliteration
The repetition of the same letter or sound (consonants) at the beginning of words.
Assonance
The repetition of the same vowel sound in a phrase or sentence.
Exclamation
A sentence ending with an exclamation mark or said with a tone or shock/excitement.
Imagery
The use of very descriptive language to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.
Metaphor
The comparison of two unlike things by saying one thing is another. This can be obvious or subtle.
Narrative voice
The point of view the text is written from.
First person- me, my, I
Second person- you
Third person- them, their, Hannah
Onomatopoeia
A word that matches the sound it is describing.
Eg: roar, meow, burp, gasp, yawn
Personification
Giving human qualities or abilities to a non-human thing.
Eg: The chair danced across the room.
Repetition
The recurrence of a word or phrase.
Rhyme
This is created when words end in the same sounds.
Short sentence
A short sentence.
Simile
The comparison of two unlike things using like or as.
Stanza
The paragraphs of poetry.
Tense
Past, present or future.
