Bird’s eye view
An angle that looks directly down on a scene.
Characterisation
The creation of a character, revealed through their speech, dress, manner, and actions.
Close up
A shot that focuses on characters head and shoulders.
Dialogue
The conversation of characters in a text.
Diegetic sound
Sound that is ‘within the world’, can be heard by the characters.
Extreme close up
A shot that focuses on part of the face or smaller details.
Extreme long shot
A shot that establishes the setting of the scene. You see everything.
Eye level
A neutral camera angle.
Frame / composition
What is included as well as what is left out of a shot.
High angle
The camera is positioned above the person or place.
Long shot
A shot that shows the full body of a character and some of the setting behind them.
Low angle
The camera is positioned below the person or place.
Medium shot
A shot that focuses on the characters body from the waist up.
Non-diegetic sound
Sound that is edited into the scene later. These are sounds that cannot be heard by the characters in the film.
Point of view
The camera becomes the character and shows us exactly what they are seeing.
