Anecdote
A personal story
Characterisation
The creation of a character, revealed through their speech, dress, manner and actions.
Connotation
The ideas,feelings or concepts associated with specific words, phrases.
Contrast
Two things that are strikingly different from each other.
Ellipsis
A dramatic pause (…) that creates tension or suggests words can’t be spoken.
Emotive language
Words that stir the readers’ emotions (that make you feel something).
Flashback
A scene set earlier than the main story. Going back in time.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration used for emphasis or effect.
For example: I’ve told you to clean your room a million times.
Juxtaposition
Two things placed side-by-side to highlight their differences.
For example: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…” Charles Dickens
Modality
Words used to express how sure the author is about something. This ranges from being uncertain (low modality) to very high ( high modality).
Rhyming scheme
The pattern of rhymes. These are created at the ends of the lines of a poem.
Rhythm
This is the beat of the poem. It can be regular or irregular.
Symbolism
The use of symbols (colours, objects,shapes, images, etc) to represent ideas or qualities.
Tone
The way the author expresses their attitude through their writing. Not what they are saying, but how they are saying it.
