Language Style Flashcards
Rapport talk
Women generally communicate and are socialized to communicate to set up a support network and make a connection to others and maintain and create intimacy.
- (women use)
Report talk
Men communicate to be center stage or center of attention or maintain status but this does not mean that all men communicate that way and that women don’t it just means that that’s the style or tendency
- (men use)
Rapport talk (women use) vs. Report talk (men use)
Men and Women communicate different ways, both have to do with language style and differences in men and women when it comes to speaking.
Powerful Language: Characterization
Absence of things like qualifier, vocalized pauses, and tag questions
- When you say something people stop and listen and say “Hey listen to what she just said”
Powerful Language: Qualifier example
I’ve never been to the grand canyon but my friend’s mother said, the part of the canyon to go to is the north rim because the south rim is so crowded because of all the people, instead of saying I’ve heard and have always wanted to go to the north rim of the grand canyon.
Powerful Language: Vocalized pauses example
Includes words like ah, like, literally, essentially, basically because they make your talk less powerful.
Powerful Language: Tag Quesiton’s example
A powerful person when walking out of a movie would say “man, Pixar had done it again, that’s a good movie were not going to forget that one”, whereas not a powerful statement with a tag question is like when someone says “I really liked that movie, what did you think” makes it less powerful,
- Is a lot has to do with socialization, often happens with women who often have a goal to set up a question and see what the other person thinks about the movie because that’s how they establish a connection and they want to see that their friend liked the movie too, which is not a bad thing but is less powerful.
Dialect
The habitual language (dialect/accent) within a community, there are different dialects within cultures
Dialect: Example
In the US there are different dialects ranging from a Bostonian dialect, which going to be different than someone who is from Mississippi with a southern dialect. Other Ex. In the north there’s dialect for a soda and a sandwich like “soda pop” and “grinder” and in the south its just coke or sub
