What are some examples of internal change (factors within language)?
Dictionaries and the omission of certain sounds
What are some examples of external changes?
Changing social context, ideologies, technology and inventions.
What were Haugen’s four stages of standardisation?
Selection, Codification, Elaboration and Implementation
What is selection?
Language selected is usually a prestigious one.
What is codification?
A reduction of variability/ establishment of lexical norms.
What is elaboration?
The variety of reasons why language expands (e.g. expansion of linguistic resources).
What is implementation?
Currency/status given to the language by making texts available in it, developing user pride and loyalty.

What are some examples of internal factors?
Assimilation (sounds becoming similar), Omission and Neatening or regularisation.
