Language Of Organic Chemistry (w19) Flashcards
What are the 4 classes of functional groups ?
- hydrocarbons
- functional groups containing SULPHUR
- functional groups containing OXYGEN
- functional groups containing NITROGEN
What are the examples of hydrocarbons ?
- alkane
- Alkene (double c bond)
- alkyne (triple c bond)
- aromatic (carbon ring)
- alkyl halide (haloalkane)
What are the examples of organic compounds containing oxygen ?
- alcohol (R-OH)
- Ether (R-OR)
- Aldehyde (RCHO)
- Ketone (RCOR)
- Carboxylic acid (RCO2H)
- Acid chloride (RCOCl)
- Acid anhydride (RCO)20
- Esther (RCO2R)
What are example of FGs containing Nitrogen ?
- Amine (primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary)
- Amide (primary, secondary or tertiary)
- Nitrile (R-C TRIPLE BOND N)
- Nitro (RNO2)
What are examples of FGs containing Sulphur ?
- Thiol (mercaptan) (R—SH)
- Thioether (sulphide) (R—S—R)
WHAT IS TAMOXIFEN ?
A common drug used to treat breast cancer - is a hormone receptor-positive (hormone positive)
What are the 4 steps to systemic naming of organic compounds ?
1) PREFIX = number of substituents, functional groups etc.
2) PARENT = length, longest continuous carbon chain.
3) INFIX = unsaturation of main chain e.g. single, double, triple C-C bond.
4) SUFFIX = dominant functional group and where it is positioned
What is a primary alcohol ?
When the carbon is attached to the OH group and has one other carbon attached to it e.g. H3C—OH
What is a secondary alcohol ?
When the carbon attached to the OH has two other carbons attached to it e.g. C—CH2—OH
What is a tertiary alcohol ?
When the carbon attached to the OH has three other carbons attached to it.
