Isomerism And Stereochemsitry (w19) Flashcards
What is stereochemistry ?
Stereochemistry is the chemistry of molecules in three dimensions
What does stereochemistry influence ?
Chemical reactivity and pharmacological actions
What are structural isomers ?
Structural (or configurational or constitutional) isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula, but atoms are bonded in different orders
What is Montelukast ?
Montelukast: Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients with asthma and prophylaxis of asthma in children (note: oral formulation)
What is a stereoisomer ?
An isomer with the same molecular formula where the atoms are bonded in same order with a different 3D arrangement
What is a configurational isomer ?
One with no conversion by rotation of a signal bond
What is a conformational isomer ?
One which has rotation around its bonds and 3D shape of the Sp3 centre
What are geometric isomers ?
Geometric isomers: stereoisomers that arise due to restricted rotation
within a molecule
When does isomer conversion occur ?
When enough energy is supplied this could be from UV radiation or is they are heated to 300*C
What is a trans isomer ?
When there are identical groups on different sides
What is a cis isomer ?
When there are identical groups on the same side
When will geometric isomerism occur ?
Only if there are two different groups at each end of the double bond
When is E/Z nomenclature used ?
The E/Z nomenclature must be used when we have completely different groups at the two ends of the double bond
Carbon has ____ property then H
HIGHER
Can chiral carbons be superimposed on their mirror image ?
They cannot
