Define learning disability
General term that refers to a group of disorders manifested by significant delays in the acquisition and use of listening, reading, writing, reasoning, and mathematics
Etiological (origins) Categories with which LD overlap
► Dyslexia: Impairment in reading
► Slow Learner: means of ability=achievement discrepancy method=slower
► ADHD: hyperactive kids– need to observe kids in multiple settings to differentiate with SLI & learnig deficit
► Phonological Processing Disorder, phonolical info processing problems=problems in reading, spelling, word retrieval…
► Central Auditory Processing Disorder: pattern of performance similar to other children with learning disabilities
► Minimal Brain dysfunction; seen through behavior or conceptual & perceptual problems
List some of the characteristics of LD provided within this definition
imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia and developmental aphasia

What characteristics would be for each of these categories
- Semantics: Word meanings and word retrieval= underdeveloped word retrieval
- Grammar: reduced MLU=slower no rapid burst
- Narratives: Shorter, fewer complete episodes
- Pragmatics: Topic management and conversational repair.
- Reading: phonological awareness problems
- Writing: Because of close relationship between reading and writing, will struggle with writing as well
productivity, text/sentence structure, spelling, lexicon, handwriting
