What are some of the reasons language disordered adolescents remains a relatively neglected group professionally?
Cycle of Neglect
– Emphasis on early intervention
– Level of services in secondary schools: 3.1% of SLPs
– Misidentification/Misdiagnosis:
– Dismissal processes: tendency to dismiss from services after elementary school
– Limited research on adolescent language: less research made, fewer assessments tools.
– Lack of professional awareness
– Level of professional preparation: many professionals feel uncomfortable assuming that role
Describe the characteristics of adolescents with LD
- Trouble with abstract or multiple meaning words
- Syntactic structures less complex
- Less adverbial connectors used : DO not define/use words well
- Struggle with relationships with peers and adults:
- Can’t adapt easily to situations: Cannot work independently and need additional prompting
- Expression and comprehension problems: do not show knowledge on tests; recall info from lessons.
- Illogically organize ideas
- Do not participate in lessons; meet minimum standards in academic work;
What are the various strategies used to ID adolescents with possible LD?
1) Teacher referrals from various types of teachers
2) Screening in order to determine discrepancy from normal expectations
3) Norm-referenced & criterion-reference
4) Analysis of spontaneous language: in daily activities
5) Classroom observations : Contrived situations, if necessary
Why do adolescents with LD struggle to interact with peers?
Because overall teenagers spend more time in discourse with each other, meaning that conversational abilities take on greater importance for adolescents
