What does Swales argue ?
That there is such thing as a ‘discourse community’ where a group shares common goals and communicate fluently with each other.
What does Drew and Heritage argue?
They argue that within a discourse community there are ‘inferential frameworks’ which consist of subtle ways of communicating.
There are strong hierarchies in the occupation field where unequal relationships are marked by language use.
What does Koester argue?
‘Phatic talk’
Where people are often informative in verbal or non-verbal communication. To start a conversation, say goodbye or say hello.
Blunt yet polite - used to form friendships.
What does Brown and Levinson argue?
The politeness theory: there is a positive face and a negative face.
What is occupational phonology?
Where certain people will use their voices in certain ways. For example a politician will speak clearly and loudly.
What does Jargon mean ?
It is a specific type of language that is used within occupations that will not be understood outside that context.
