Language and handedness Flashcards
How many left-handers are there approximately in the general population? (percentage)
approx 8-12% of left-handers
Humans are the only population where a preference in handedness is found, true or false?
true, long history can be traced bac to approx 2 million years ago, seems like an evolutionary trait
What is the model proposed by Annett, 1984
The genetic model for right-handedness, the right shift factor RS+ for people who have this factor, people who lack this factor are RS- and without the right shift factor, handedness would be determined by environment, like in animals. Left-handers are RS- AND if you are right-handed you can be RS+ or RS-
Cite a study about left handedness being overpresent in males and detail the study
Geschwind&Galaburda 1985 : proposed that high level of testosterone in the developing male brain leads to higher lateralization hence higher rates of males being left handed : selective male vulnerability
Baron cohen’s extension of geschind & galaburda theory
His extreme male brain theory of autism and the empathizing systemizing theory are based on the same principles
Cite 3 non invasive methods used in neuroscience (NOT brain imaging)
-EEG - Electroencephalogram
-ERP - Event-related potentials
(Both using scalp electrodes)
-Electrical Stimulation - electroconvulsive shock therapy ( ECS or ECT) for severe depression in human but rare
How does fMRI works, what are the problems with it?
The dominant method in neuroscience - measures blood flow in different brain areas - but not a direct measure of neuronal activity
Cite all brain imaging technics:
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
CAT scan (computed axial tomography)
PET scan (positron emission tomography)
fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging)
Diffusion Tensor Imaging: fairly recent, uses mri technic to measure water flow in axons
