Nativist (biological) theory
advocates for the existence of some innate capacity for language. They believe in a critical period for language acquisition between 2 and puberty.
Learning (behaviorist) theory
explained language acquisition by operant conditioning. Parents repeat and reinforce sounds that sound most like the language spoken by the parents.
Social interactionist theory
language acquisition is driven by the child’s desire to communicate and behave in a social manner.
Whorfian hypothesis
the way we think about the world is determined by the content of language.
Conduction aphasia
damage to arcute fasciculus connecting Wernicke’s area and Broca’s area marked by inability to repeat words despite intact speech production and comprehension (W and B are fine).
