Background/ Context
False memories happen when post-event info changes the OG memory so a person believes the false memory was part of the OG event
Aims
- Can a positive false memory such as the suggestion they loved a specific food as a child
Method

IV - the love group (false asparagus memory implanted) and the control group
DV - Scores on various questionnaires

Participants
128 undergrads
- got course credits
- randomly allocated to love or control group
- 63 participants in love group, 65 control group
Apparatus
SESSION 1
- Food history inventory (24 items rated on 8pt scale)
item 16 “loves asparagus the last time you tried it”
- Restaurant questionnaire -> looks like a menu 8pt scale
SESSION 2
- Food preference questionnaire (62 items 8pt scale)
- Food costs questionnaire (21 food items -> how much would be willing to pay)
- Memory / Belief Questionnaire (have specific memory, belief that it happened, positive it didn’t happen)
Procedure
SESSION 1
Participants completed food history inventory + restaurant questionnaire. 3 “filler” questionnaire
SESSION 2
- One week later they returned -> exp. group false feedback “you loved to east asparagus”
- they answered questions (scale 1-9)
- all participants completed food history inventory + restaurant questionnaire
Data
Quantitative -> 1-8 scale
Findings
Positively framed false beliefs about experiments w/ foods can be created and these beliefs can lead to an increased liking of these foods
48% said they liked whereas in the beginning they didn’t
