Tree Landings

A
  • Avoid
  • Jettison PDB (if lowered)
  • Keep goggles and o2 mask on
  • Turn into wind and attempt to land between small or sparse trees
  • In dense trees attempt to “cap” your canopy on top of trees
  • Rotate hands and arms in front of your face as you make contact with trees
  • Prepare to conduct a PLF
  • If suspended, signal for assistance

Water Landings

A
  • Avoid
  • Land near shore
  • Jettison CE and O2 mask
  • Unhook RSL, unfasten chest and waist band
  • Land into the wind, flare, PLF
  • As you enter the water release leg strap ejector snap and arch out of the harness, swim away from harness and parachute
  • If you are being dragged, pull red cutaway pillow
  • If trapped under canopy, follow seam to edge, or create an air pocket

Wire Landings

A
  • If you have the time to do the following, you have time to turn and avoid the wires! Do not land in wires!
  • Do not fly over wires at an altitude below 1,000’ AGL
  • Any landing to include a downwind landing is preferred to a wire landing
  • Jettison rucksack
  • Turn off O2 if used
  • Disconnect RSL
  • Attempt to fly parallel to wires in an attempt to pass through the wires
  • Prepare for a PLF
  • If contact w/ the ground is made cutaway and move away quickly
  • If suspended, remain motionless until power is cut off
  • Don’t let anyone touch you and do not cutaway (this may complete the circuit!!!)

High Wind Landings

A
  • Upon contact with the ground
  • Release one toggle
  • Pull the control line of the other toggle hand over hand until the canopy collapses
  • Pivot in the direction of the pulled toggle
  • Run around to the top of canopy and attempt to contain the tail of the canopy

Recover From A Drag

A
  • Release one toggle
  • Pull the other hand over hand until the canopy stops
  • If unsuccessful: disconnect the RSL, pull red cutaway pillow (do not complete cutaway procedures)

Dust Devils Under Canopy

A

• Stay alert under canopy for signs of swirling or erratic wind conditions
• DZSO may use red smoke
• Avoid by maneuvering away under canopy
• Even a downwind landing is preferred to flying into a dust devil
• If unable to avoid:
o Go to full flight, be prepared to conduct 12-24” cobra strike
o As you approach the ground flare canopy fully and be prepared to conduct a PLF

A
  • Contain your canopy
  • If you are unable to gain control your canopy, disconnect your RSL and pull red cutaway Pillow (do not complete cutaway procedures)
