FREE-FALL_EMERGENCIES_PROCEDURES Flashcards
Towed Jumper (Combat Equipment)
- Maintain arch
- An instructor will free the snag hazard
- That instructor will exit with you
- Unconscious jumper will be pulled back inside the aircraft
Collision On Exit Or In Free-Fall
- Arch
- Gently push off with open hands
- Do not grab anything
- Maintain stability
- Check altimeter
- Check handles and equipment
- Continue the jump as planned
Spinning
• Relax
• Arch
• Check hands and feet
• Counter spin by attempting to turn in the opposite direction
• Maintain altitude awareness and pull at the prescribed altitude
• If unable to maintain altitude awareness and spinning hopelessly out of control, wave off and pull
*Note: Your instructor will get to you. Don’t pull your parachute if you have spun on exit!
Tumbling
• Relax
• Arch
• Keep your head up
• Check hands and feet
• Maintain altitude awareness and pull at the prescribed altitude
• If unable to maintain altitude awareness and tumbling out of control, wave off and pull
*Note: Your instructor will get to you. Don’t pull your parachute if you tumble on exit!
Entering A Cloud (In Free-Fall)
- Stop all movement
- Maintain heading
- Maintain altitude awareness
- Pull at the prescribed altitude even if you are still in the cloud
Lost Goggles
- Make one attempt to replace them
- If unsuccessful, squint eyes and continue free-fall as planned
- If unable to maintain altitude awareness, wave off and pull
Lost Or Broken Altimeter (In Free-Fall)
If your instructor is with you
• Tap your altimeter to signal that your altimeter is lost or broken
• Your instructor will signal you when to pull
If you are alone in free-fall
• Observe other jumpers and pull when they do
• If you are unable to observe other jumpers clear your airspace, wave off and pull
Rucksack Shifts
- If the rucksack shifts and causes a turn
- Counter the turn by turning in the opposite direction
- If the rucksack strap moves below your knee, make one attempt to replace it while maintaining a stable body position.
Collision Avoidance During Free-Fall
- Remember that the lower jumper has the right of way
- Never get over the top of another jumper
- Use turns and forward movement to get off a jumpers back
Premature Activation Of Parachute In Free-Fall
• Determine which canopy is deployed
o Main: 3-ring assembly, collapsible slider, pilot chute in tow, trim tabs
o Reserve: no 3-ring assembly, mesh slider, no pilot chute in tow, no trim tabs
• Do a canopy controllability check
• Continue to the intended drop zone
PULL PRIORITIES
- Pull
* Never sacrifice altitude for stability
POST-EXIT EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Malfunction Types
• High-speed malfunction: reduced decision time, CYPRES will fire
• Low-speed malfunction: at least 5 cells inflated
Note: Only attempt to clear malfunctions twice and only twice. Your first attempt is during normal pull sequence
*Cutaway decision altitude 2500’ AGL
*Below 1000’ AGL and the main canopy malfunctions jumper will pull reserve ripcord
CUTAWAY PROCEDURES

Counter - with the left hand
Look - to identify the red cutaway pillow on the right main lift web
Grab - the red cutaway pillow with the right hand
Pull - the red cutaway pillow to full arm extension
