Landing Gear Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Shock Strut?
ans. It supports the aircraft on the ground,
and protects the aircraft structure by
absorbing the shock on landing
In the shock strut, which acts as the spring and as the dampener?
ans. The compressed nitrogen gas works like a spring to absorb the shock and the hydraulic fluid has a dampening function
It transmits the landing gear shock loads
from the drag strut to the aircraft structure?
ans. Trunnion Link
Where does the trunnion link rotate?
ans. Spherical Bearings
What is the function of spherical bearing?
ans. Transmit vertical loads and drag loads into the airframe without transferring torque
to the structure and to the outer cylinder
during structural deflections
It permits the inner cylinder to move up and
down in the outer cylinder, but do not permit the inner cylinder to rotate in the outer cylinder?
ans. Torsion Links / Torque Links
Is used to counteract wheel shimmy and decreases the landing and takeoff vibrations?
Torsion Link Damper/ Shimmy Damper
Is used to stabilize the shock strut in the fore and aft direction during takeoff, landing and
taxiing?
ans. Drag Strut / Drag Stay / Drag Brace
It gives lateral support to the shock strut?
ans. Side Strut / Side Stay / Side Brace
It makes sure that the two parts cannot fold together when the main gear is extended?
ans. Gear Down lock Mechanism
It converts hydraulic pressure into mechanical energy to extend and retract the main gear?
ans. Main Gear actuator
The Fluid Metering Devices?
ans. Restricts the flow toward the end of the extension or retraction softens the extension for smooth movement.
It makes sure that the gear is in the down and locked position?
ans. Lock Strut / Lock Stay / Jury Strut
What is the function of the gear uplock mechanism?
ans. To keep the gear in an up and locked position under all flight conditions
When there is too much oil in the shock strut it?
ans. The shock strut operates harshly because oil cannot be compressed
When there is too much gas it?
ans. The result is a soft strut because gas is compressible
What happens to the body gears of Boeing 747 when the nose gear turns a certain angle in one direction?
ans. The body gear turns a smaller but proportional angle in the opposite direction
The centerline gear gives what in the Airbus 340 and MD D1?
ans. It gives heavy aircraft a larger foot print
It gives secondary support for the down and locked position of the nose gear and it controls the alignment of the folding drag strut?
ans. Lock Stay
In steering when is the Steering wheels / Tillers used?
ans. Used the aircraft at low speeds or around narrow bends. Max of 80 degrees steering to the left or right
In steering when is the rudder pedals used?
Used to steer the aircraft at high speeds like takeoff and landing. Max of 10 degrees steering to the left or right
EWD doors are closed when the gear is extended because?
ans. To prevent inadvertent drag during Takeoff and Landing
AFT Nose gear doors are?
ans. Open when the Nose Gear is extended
How many levers for extension and retractions system?
ans. 1 Landing Gear Lever - for extension and retraction of the landing gear. 1 for Free fall extension system but only for extension
What are the conditions for Retraction?
ans. The Aircraft is in flight and The nose gear are centered
What is System 1 in Indirect nose wheel steering system?
ans. Mechanical Operated andHydraulically Actuated
What is System 2 in Indirect nose wheel steering system?
ans. Electrically Operated and Hydraulically Actuated
When is Two Jack method used as actuation?
ans. Mechanically operated system (System 1)
When is the Rack and Pinion method used as actuation?
ans. Electrically operated system (System 2)
What are the valves used for servicing the shock strut with nitrogen and hydraulic fluid?
ans. Air charging valve and oil charging valve
When does the centering cams engage?
ans. the inner cylinder extends to make sure that the nose gear is in a straight and forward position during retraction
Purpose of the Landing Gear Control Interface Unit?
ans. Sends control to the selector valves and the selector valves control the extension and retraction of the gears and movement of the doors
It reduces the tire heating at high temperatures and it releases the tire pressure when temperature increases?
ans. Fusible Plugs / Thermal Relief Plug
How is the life span of tires calculated?
ans. Calculated on the numbers of take-offs and landings. Tires can be used for approximately 150 - landings and take-offs
Tires are inflated with?
ans. Nitrogen
During landing what happens at the Kinetic Energy?
ans. Kinetic Energy is converted to Heat Energy
It protects the tire and provide more efficient braking?
ans. Anti-skid System
It limits the applied braking on our tires based on relative aircraft speed and ground conditions
ans. Anti-skid System
How si the Parking brake system used when the all the brake systems are de-pressurized?
ans. We use Brake accumulator
This brake stops the rotation of the wheels during the retraction of the gears?
ans. In-Flight Brake
It stops the aircraft at the selected deceleration level without pilots touching the brake pedals?
ans. Auto Brake System.
Speed brakes automatically extend when the aircraft touches down so
ans. Auto Braking is activated by the extension of the speed brakes
