Q
LAND USES IN LAKE DISTRICT
(GLACIATED UPLAND AREA)
A
- Hill sheep farming - Sheep can easily survive in high mountain areas, crops can’t be grown as machinery is too hard to get up the mountains and soil is infertile due to little sunshine and lots of rainfall. Sheep are hardy, agile and sure footed, they have thick woolen coats to keep them warm especially in winter, they thrive off of poor quality grazing, they don’t require much care and attention.
- Forestry - Coniferous trees grow well in upland areas such as pine, spruce and larch, more than 75,000 tons of timber is produced from these trees each year, provides many jobs such as cutting down trees and transporting the timber.
- Water supply - Rainfall is heavy and lakes such as lake windermere are used to store the water for people of manchester. Natural lakes are cheaper than constructing a resovoir, granite is an impermeable rock which stores the water.
- Wind farms (renewable energy) - high marginal land for building wind farms as there is strong winds which turn the turbines quickly, generating power.
