Ladder Manual Flashcards
How many sections does the Pierce Tiller aerial have?
4
What is the reach of the Pierce Tiller aerial?
107’ above ground at 75 degrees
100’ horizontal at 0 degrees.
Aerial will go to 77 degrees above horizontal.
Note the extra 7’ in the vertical reach of the aerial versus the horizontal reach is attributed to the distance from the ground to the turntable.
Pierce Tiller aerial capacity.
750 Lb. Dry
500 Lb. Wet
Describe the tip of the the Pierce Tiller aerial.
Tip is red section at the end of the aerial. Consists of the last 2 rungs. Designed to “breakaway” as a safety feature to protect the rest of the ladder.
The Pierce Tiller ladder has a flow capacity of __________ GPM.
1,000
With an automatic fog nozzle or smooth bore nozzle.
Note- It is capable of discharging up to 1,000 GPM at 100 PSI in any position into a 50 MPH wind.
What is the maximum flow rating for the automatic nozzle on the end of JFRD’s ladder pipe? (Also applies to 2” smoothbore tip.)
2,000 GPM.
Note- Remember event though the nozzle is rated for 2,000 GPM, the ladder pipe itself is only rated for 1.000 GPM. (With the exception of tower ladders.) This is a discrepancy between the ladder & engineer manual. Engineer’s manual has 2” smoothbore rated for 1,000 GPM instead of 2,000.
The aerial has the capacity of going _____ below horizontal by adjusting the stabilizers.
5 degrees
Can be lowered to 15 degrees below horizontal by manipulating the stabilizers & the aerial.
Placing the ladder below horizontal coupled with the nozzle’s ability to be pointed upward at a 30 degree angle allows for a _________________ which is useful on strip malls, store fronts, garage doors, etc. - or some level of below grade access.
Blitz Attack
The aerial has a ______________________ that will prevent the aerial from being rotated to the side where the stabilizer is not fully deployed.
Rotation interlock system
The ladder is equipped with ____________________________ to restrict ladder movement when system hydraulic pressure is not present.
Holding valve cartridges & a rotational brake.
Overriding the rotational interlock system can lead to ___________the ladder truck.
Tipping
The ladder has a safety factor of _______ based on the rated load.
2:1
There is a lower control station located on each ___________ of the apparatus (Pierce Tiller) with all controls & indicators clearly identified.
Each side
Stabilizer electric controls are strategically located on each side of the apparatus so the operator has a __________ of the stabilizer being positioned.
Full view.
This is displayed on the touch screen of the turntable control console. It indicates the current GPM & the intake pressure when water is being flowed.
Water Flow Gauge
The Override Switch is used to bypass ALL safety interlocks except for the ___________________.
Emergency Stop Button.
(Turntable) console is (also) illuminated by work lights that are activated by the __________________ switch.
Aerial master
When the nozzle is in the fully stowed position, the orange _______________ will be lit.
Nozzle Deployed/ Fault Indicator Light
If there is not an immediate need to rescue a victim via a ground ladder, the 1st ground ladder should be placed on the _______________ .
C (Charlie) side or rear of the structure.
All roof & extension ladder are rated at ______________ lbs.
750
If ground ladders are exposed to heat greater than___________, the heat indicators will turn ____________ & the ladders should be taken out of service.
300 degrees F
Black
Weight limit of attic ladders.
300 Lbs
Tiller ladder compliment
14’ roof ladder 16’ roof ladder X 2 20’ roof ladder X 2 28’ extension ladder X 2 35’ extension ladder X 2 Attic ladder X 2
Bedded lengths of extension ladders.
24’ = 14’ 28’ = 16’ 35’ = 20’
A ground ladder being placed for roof access should extend __________ rungs above the roof line.
3-5
Note- This makes is easier for crew working on the roof to see the ladder & allows crews to get on & off the ladder with ease.
A ground ladder being placed to a window for rescue, access, and/or egress should be placed at the ____________ of the windowsill.
Bottom
Note- This will keep the window clear of obstruction.
Combination ladder (Little Giant) specs
Max height - 17’
Weight limit - 300 lbs
VES (Vent, Enter, Search) Ladder specs
Shortened roof ladder Access to 1st floor windows of off grade houses or mobile homes Weight limit- not tested Access from parapet to roof Length- Approximately 7’
Normal JFRD saw compliment for ladders
2 chainsaws
2 rescue saws
1 reciprocating saw
Husqvarna K970 / Rescue Saw (K12) specs
Max depth cut - 5”
Max blade diameter - 14”
Fuel- mixed gas (ratio is 50:1)
Adjustable blade guard
D-Ax blade / Carbide tipped blade specs
Used to cut light gauge metal, wood, & roofing material
More prone to kickback than diamond tipped blades. Can also throw materials away from the blade.
Should never be used to cut wood in non-rescue situations.
Cannot be sharpened.
When using a diamond tipped blade, make sure it rotates in the direction indicated by the ________ on the blade.
Arrow
When dry-cutting (diamond blades), lift the blade out from the cut every ___________ seconds & let it rotate in the air for _________ seconds to let it cool.
30-60
10
Diamond blades can be sharpened by cutting in a soft material such as ___________________.
Sandstone or brick
The Sawzall (reciprocating saw) uses a _______ volt battery.
20
When the hose roller is used in conjunction with hose, it should be placed on the ___________ rung of the aerial to protect the hose from abrasion.
Last
When the hose roller is used with rope, it should not be attached to the last rung of the aerial. It should be attached a minimum of ________________.
1 rung from the last.
Note- This captures the rope between the last 2 rungs of the aerial for safety reasons.
