What is the bushfire acronym LACES?
L - Lookouts for risks on the fireground
A - Awareness of fire behaviour and location
C – Communications with everyone on the fireground. Follow comms plan.
E – Escape routes if possible, two or more
S – Safety zones should be identified and made known to FF’s on scene.
Example: Firefighters must always remember the acronym LACES during bushfire operations.
What is the importance of Anchor Points?
Direct attack should always commence working from an anchor point
Anchor points provide a safe and strategic starting point for firefighting operations.
What are some possible anchor points?
Bare ground
Blackened out fire edge
Site of a recent bushfire
Non-flammable area such as a lake or river
Example: Firefighters should assess and utilize these anchor points during bushfire suppression efforts.
