Laboratory Equipment Flashcards
Used for storing, heating, or mixing small amounts of chemicals.

Test Tube
A round bottomed vessel with a long neck. It is used to hold liquids and can be easily swirled and heated. It can also easily be capped by rubber or glass stoppers.

Florence Flask
Used for more carefully measuring the volume of a liquid. The smaller the diameter of the tube, the more specific the measurement will be. \

Graduated Cylinder
Used to very accurately measure one specific volume of liquid. A line on the neck indicates how far to fill for the indicated volume.

Volumetric Flask
A round piece of glass that is slightly concave. It can hold a small amount of liquid or solid. They can be used for evaporation purposes and also can function as a lid for a beaker.

Watch Glass
A triangle formed with ceramic cylinders wrapped around a metal frame, with an open center used to suspend crucibles.

Clay Triangle
Used to produce a flame in the lab. Connected to a flammable gas source via a tube. A knob at the bottom controls gas flow, and a rotating collar controls air flow.

Bunsen Burner
Used to scoop chemicals, often from the chemical’s container onto a weigh boat for massing.

Weigh Boat
Walk into class and say this phrase to Mr. Wade to receive a bonus point on the quiz.

Take me to your leader
Attached to ring stand and with wire gauze used to hold beakers or flasks over a heat source, or to allow a funnel to drain into another container.

Ring Clamp
Used for mixing, heating, and stirring chemicals. Includes a lip for pouring and marks for estimating volume. Due to the lip around the rim, there are no lids, although a watch glass may be used to cover it to prevent splashing or contamination

Beaker
A small clay cup made of a material that can withstand extreme temperatures. They are used for heating substances and come with a lid.

Crucible and Cover
Used for the extremely accurate measurement of a volume of liquid. A mark above the bulb indicates the level to which the liquid should be drawn into the tube for the indicated volume.

Volumetric Pipette
Used to close flasks or test tubes, and come in many different sizes. The sizes are from 0 to 8 (the bigger the number, the larger). May have holes for thermometers and for other probes that may be used.

Rubber Stoppers
A ceramic bowl in which a solid is crushed or gound using a ceramic tool.

Mortal and Pestle
These are small glass tubes with narrow tips on one end and a rubber bulb on the other. They suck up liquid that can then be squeezed out in small drops.

Dropper Pipette
Made of stainless steel and used to handle small pieces of solid material. Commonly referred to as tweezers.

Forceps
Used to suspend burettes, beakers, flasks, crucibles, etc. above other containers or, in some cases, a heat source

Ring Stand
Used to hold a test tube while heating it.

Test Tube Holder
An adjustable device used to connect a buret (or test tube) to a ring stand.

Burette/Test Tube Clamp
Used to stir chemicals. The flexible attachment is used to transfer solid residues from the walls of a glass container.

Stirring Rod and Rubber Policeman
A ceramic bowl used to evaporate the liquid away from a small volume of solution

Evaporating Dish
Used for transferring liquids (sometimes solids) to containers with small openings, in order to prevent spills. They can also be used with filter paper in the process of filtration. May be made of glass or plastic, although glass better resists chemical reactions.

Funnel
Used for measuring an exact volume of a liquid and transferring it to another container. Graduation marks are used to indicate volumes.

Graduated Pipette
A glass tube that is open at the top and comes to a narrow pointed opening at the bottom. Above the bottom opening is a stopcock that can be turned to control the amount of liquid being released. There are markings along the length of the tube that indicate the volume of liquid present. It is used for extremely accurate addition of liquid. By adjusting the stopcock, the amount of liquid that is released can be slowed to a drop every few seconds. These are one of the most accurate tools in the lab.

Burette
Used for handling crucibles, evaporating dishes, and other hot objects.

Crucible Tongs
Used to pick up a hot beaker.

Beaker Tongs
Filled with distilled water and used to rinse or wash other containers.

Wash Bottle
A glass vessel with a narrow neck that expands towards its base. This allows easy mixing and swirling without too much risk of spilling. The narrow opening also allows for the use of a rubber or glass stopper.

Erlenmeyer Flask
Used for holding test tubes while reactions are occurring or when they are not in use.

Test Tube Rack
Used for flipping, clipping, and spreading substances.

Microspatula
Used with a ring clamp to support glassware over a Bunsen burner. Spreads flame out for more even heating.

Wire Gauze
Used for weighing solids on a balance.
