Lower neutrophil count indicates increased susceptibility to infection
If you see a low neutrophil count, calculate ANC

Absolute Neutrophil Count

Q
A patient is being seen at the oncology clinic after her
first round of chemotherapy one week ago. A CBC with
differential is ordered and reported back as WBC = 14.8
x 103 cells/mm3 , segs 10% and bands 11%. Calculate
the patients ANC
A
ANC (cells/mm3) = WBC x [(% neutrophils + % bands)/100]
ANC (cells/ mm3) = 14.8 x 103 x [(10 + 11)/100] = 3,108
cells/mm3 → Patient is normal
