Labor and delivery - Induction of labor Flashcards
Criteria for labor
- 1 in 10 mins contraction with atleast 200 mvu
- Cervical dilation >3 cm
- Cervical effacement of >70 to 80%
Pre-induction assessment
- Confirmation of parity
- Confirmation of AOG
- Fetal presentation
- Bishop score
- Uterine acivivity

- Capability or LR/DR
Bishop scoring is to determine what?
Assess cervical favorability
Favorable cervix Bishop score
≥ 9

Method of labor induction that has the potential to increase local prostaglandin, and may reduce pregnancy duration or pre-empt formal induction of labor with oxytocin or amniotomy
Membrane stripping
Signs of oxytocin hyperstimulation
- Five (5) contractions in 10 minutes or more than 10 contractions in 20 minutes
- Hypertonus (contractions lasting more than 120 seconds)
- Excessive uterine activity with an atypical or abnormal fetal heart rate
Early and late amniotomy
- Cervical diltation
- Accelerates labor by
- Early
- 1 to 2 cm
- 4 hours
- Late
- 5 cm
- 2 hours
Complications of amniotomy
- Chorioamnionitis
- Umbilical cord prolapse
- Cord compression
- FHR deceleration
- Bleeding from fetal or placental parts
