Fetal surveillance - CST Flashcards
1
Q
In contrast with NST, what does CST test?
A
- CST is a test of uteroplacental function
- NST is a test of fetal condition
2
Q
Can be performed when?
A
If the NST is nonreactive
3
Q
How done?
A
- Lateral recumbent position
- Contractions are stimulated
4
Q
Stimulating contractions
A
- Administration of oxytocin (Pitocin)
- Nipple stimulation (2 min self-stimulation through clothes every 5 min)
5
Q
Criteria for adequate contractions
A
- Occur three times in 10 min.
- Lasting at least 40 sec.
- Moderate to palpation
6
Q
Interpretation of findings
A
- As the presence or absence of late decelerations
- Negative
- No late or significant variable decelerations
- Positive
- Late decelerations following 50% or more of contractions
- Equivocal-suspicious
- Intermittent late decelerations or significant variable decelerations
- Equivocal-hyperstimulatory
- FHR decelerations that occur in the presence of contractions more frequent than every 2 minutes or lasting longer than 90 seconds
- Unsatisfactory
- Fewer than three contractions in 10 min
- Negative
