IF A NUTRITIONAL CLAIM IS MADE THEN NUTRITIONAL INFOR MUST BE INCLUDED ( energy/ carbs/ protein/ fat )
What else might be included on packaging?
- Logos
- Quality assurance marks Eg. RED TRACTOR LOGO
These are to help sell their products
Why is the NAME necessary?
- So consumers are not mislead
- Clearly stated
- Processing must be stated Eg. ‘dried’ cranberries
Why is the WEIGHT/VOLUME necessary?
- So consumers can compare weight & price of different products
Why is an INGREDIENTS LIST necessary?
- So consumers with allergies & intolerances know which foods to avoid
- A new EU Labelling rule of 2004 requires the 14 following foods to be stated in highest to lowest weight:
- Milk
- Eggs
- Peanuts
- Nuts from trees
- Fish
- Crustaceans
- Soya
- Wheat
- Celery
- Mustard
- Sesame
- Lupins
- Molluscs
- Sulphur Dioxide
Why is a GM INGREDIENTS LIST necessary?

USE BY = high risk perishables Eg cooked meat & fish ( foods that can cause poisoning if not used by the date )
BEST BEFORE = To show when foods will no longer be at their best but still safe to eat

- How long for
- Reheating
- From frozen/chilled
PLACE OF ORIGIN:
MUST BE CLEARLY STATED
Why are the MANUFACTURER’S DETAILS necessary?
- So the consumer has the ability to contact them if there is a problem or query
Why is a LOT/BATCH NUMBER necessary?
A code to identify batches making recalling products easier to do so
What are GDA’s?
GUIDELINE DAILY AMOUNTS
- Help consumers understand nutrition
- The approximate amounts of nutrients required for a healthy diet
- Not for individuals ( very general ) base on population figures
- Not an aim
- 5-10yrs have their own GDA’s
What is TRAFFIC LIGHTING?
3 Colours used to help consumers choose healthily HIGH/ MEDIUM/ LOW = RED/ AMBER/ GREEN These apply for: - Fats - Saturated fats - Salt - Sugars
