2
Q

what do the prothrombin/PTT measurements mean

A

if the blood takes longer than 14 seconds to clot, then the blood is thin. If blood takes shorter than 11 seconds to clot, then it is considered thick

7
Q

What is INR

A

the ratio of the patient’s clotting ability against the normal clotting ability. INR= PT patient/PT normal

12
Q

What is BUN used for?

A

To determine how well your kidneys are working.
It does this by measuring the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood. Urea nitrogen is a waste product that’s created in the liver when the body breaks down proteins. Normally, the kidneys filter out this waste, and urinating removes it from the body.

16
Q

What does a low retic count tell you

A

iron deficiency anemia

17
Q

What does an elevated retic count tell you

A

hemolytic anemia, acute blood loss

18
Q

What does a low retic count tell you

A

anemia w infection, renal disease

19
Q

normal neutrophil count

A

1.5-8.5 the risk of infection goes up the lower the neutrophil count is

20
Q

Normal wbc

A

4,500-11,000

21
Q

What do neutrophils tests for

A

acute bacterial infection, inflammation, tissue death

22
Q

pH normal level

A

7.35-7.45

23
Q

Normal RBC values for men and women

A
  1. 7-6.1 in males

4. 2-5.4 in females

24
Q

What is anion gap?

A

The difference between cations and anions in the blood

25
Q

What is the anion gap equation

A

(Na + K) - (Cl + HC03)

26
Q

What does a high anion gap mean

A

a larger proportion of our negative charge is not accounted for by the equation, meaning in a case of metabolic acidosis, the cause may be due to lactic acid build up (shock), ketoacidosis (diabetic), or methanol consumption.

27
Q

What does a normal anion gap acidosis mean

A

Normal anion gap acidosis: bicarb is decreased but body is compensating with Cl (kidneys inc CL reabsorption)

28
Q

What can cause normal anion gap

A

bicarp loss (diarrhea)

29
Q

Platelet normal value

A

> 100,000

30
Q

What does a chem 10 measure

A

Na, K, mg, Cl, bicarb, BUN, creatinine, glucose, calcium, phosphorus

31
Q

Potassium normal values

A

3.5-5.5meq
