Lab Unit 01: Intro Flashcards
Cranial
- relating to the skull or cranium
* toward the head or cranium
Caudal
toward the feet or tail region
Superior
refers to a structure that is nearer the vertex, the topmost point of the cranium
Inferior
refers to a structure that is nearer the sole of the foot
Medial
indicates that a structure is nearer to the median plane of the body
Lateral
indicates that a structure is farther away from the median plane
Proximal
nearer to the attachment of a limb or the central aspect of a linear structure
Distal
farther from the attachment of a limb or the central aspect of a linear structure
Dorsal / Posterior
the back surface of the body
nearer to the back
Ventral / Anterior
the front surface of the body
nearer to the front
Rostal
- often used instead of anterior when describing parts of the brain
- nearer the anterior part of the head
Palmar aspect / surface
- describes the surfaces of hands and fingers
* Dorsum + Palm
Plantar aspect / surface
- describes the surfaces of the foot and toes
* Dorsum + Sole
Median plane
(median sagittal plane)
• Midline of the body
Sagittal planes
& coronal axis
• parallel to the median plane (midline)
• dividing the body into a left + right side
• Flexion + Extension
Frontal / Coronal planes
& sagittal axis
• at a right angle to the median plane (midline)
• dividing the body in anterior + posterior
• Abduction & Adduction
Transverse planes
& longitudinal axis
• horizontal planes
• dividing the body into an upper + lower part
• Rotation
Dermatome
unilateral area of skin innervated by the fibers of a single spinal nerve
Myotome
unilateral muscle mass receiving innervation from the fibers conveyed by a single spinal nerve
Monosynaptic Reflex
A spinal level reflex which occurs with only one synapse between a single afferent nerve fiber and a single efferent nerve fiber. Formerly know as Deep Tendon Reflex.
