(Lab Safety and Scientific Method) Lab Equipment Flashcards
Make sure to look at the slides for photos of each equipment. These slides are only used to remember the usage of each lab equipment. Does not include bonus equipment.
Beaker
Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.
Scoopula
Made of metal and used to “scoop” out samples
Mortar & Pestle
Used to crush sample
The mortar is the bowl.
Thermometer
Used to measure the temperature of a sample
The red liquid is alcohol and a red dye.
Test tubes
to mix chemicals, hold liquids, heat liquids, grow bacteria, and collect or store fluids.
Beaker Tongs
Beaker tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids
Overflow can
Is used to measure the volume of an irregular object and determine the density of the object
Erlenmeyer Flask
Erlenmeyer flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.
Florence Flask
Rarely used in first year chemistry, it is used for the mixing of chemicals. Narrow neck prevents splash exposure.
Graduated Cylinder
A graduated cylinder is used to measure volumes of liquids.
Test tube holder/tongs
A test tube holder is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.
Test tube racks
Test tube racks are for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter. Plastic racks may melt in contact with very hot test tubes.
Rubber stoppers
Rubber stoppers are used to close containers to avoid spillage or containment.
Bunsen Burner
Bunsen burners are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids.
Gas lighter/striker
Strikers are used to light Bunsen burners.
