LAB PROCEDURE AND TOOLS-SAFTEY Flashcards
General safety measures
- Remove jewelry and loose clothing
- No food and drink
- Beware of hot / sharp parts and areas using high voltage
- Dont open power supply or CRT monitor
Electrical Safety Measures
- Do not exchange AC adapters between PCs
2. Do not wear AWS when repairing power supplies or CRT monitors
Fire Safety Measures
- Have and know how to use an extinguisher
- Be alert of burning odors - overheating
- Never fight an out of control fire
- Get out quickly
Precautions against Electrostatic Discharge(ESD)
- Store all components in antistatic bags
- Grounded mats on floors and work benches
- Use antistatic Wrist Straps
Types of AC power fluctuations that cause loss of data or Hardware failure(5)
1.BLACKOUT
Complete loss-blown fuse, damaged transformer etc
2.BROWNOUT
Reduced voltage over a long period of time
3.NOISE
Interference from generators and lighting- poor quality power leading to errors
4.SPIKE
Sudden increase in voltage that lasts a short time and exceeds 100 percent of normal voltage. Lightning or when a system comes on after a spike
5.POWER SURGE
Dramatic increase in voltage above the normal flow of electrical current
Examples of power protection devices
- Surge repressor- Diverts excess to the ground
- UPS-Supplies consistent level of quantity of power
- Standby Power Supply-Provides backup when voltage drops below normal. Is on stand-by
What is preventive maintenance and how does it increase the lifespan of a computer?
Regular and routine maintenance of equipment and assets in order to keep them running and prevent costly unplanned downtime from equipment failure
- Prevents age related failure
- Practices like tidying up prevents accidents
- Protects from breakdown caused by malicious software
- Practices like deleting unused files reduces strain on some components
Examples of preventive maintenance on software
- Running malware checks
- Updating documentation and software environment
- Optimizing code
Examples of preventive maintenance on hardware
cleaning
lubrication
parts replacement
When shouldn’t you wear the AWS?
Do not wear AWS when repairing power supplies or CRT monitors
How many volts does it take to damage a computer system?
less than 30
For ESD to be felt-at least 3000V
