APPLIED NETWORKING II Flashcards
What are examples of communication tools
-Instant Messaging (IM)
-Short Message Service (SMS)
Short Message Service(SMS)- short text messages
between mobile phones.
• Multimedia Message Service(MMS)-multimedia messages such as images and
videos, to other users
• Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP)
Enables voice messages to be sent from computer to computer over the internet
-Emails
What are the benefits of Instant Messaging (IM)
• Real-time communication • Knowing whether contact are online • Low cost • The ability to transfer files Eg Whatsapp
What are the benefits of Emails
- Email arrives almost instantaneously
- They are cheap to send
- Messages can be accessed at any time
What are the problems when sending file
attachments
- File size and network restrictions
- File types and anti-virus restrictions eg .exe, .bat
- Receiving fraudulent and unsolicited e-mail
What is phishing
when we receive an email from a sender pretending to be a legitimate company in an attempt to get you to give confidential personal information
What is online collaboration
• Is the ability for a group of people to work together and communicate in real time over the internet.
What are examples of services that support online collaboration
• Cloud Computing • Mobile Technology Such as laptops, tablets and smartphones can enable users to access the internet anytime, anywhere via wireless technology.
What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing is a technology that lets
users access and use computing resources
and files, folders and applications over the
internet. This files, applications and folders are accessed over the internet from the hosting server
What are the Characteristics of Online collaborative tools
• Multiple users - Any number of users can
collaborate at a time, using same application.
• Real time: Supporting services for online
collaboration enables users to simultaneously edit
files with changes that each user make being
applied on the instantly.
• Global reach: The tools are not confined to a particular location but enable users to collaborate at any time from anywhere in the world provided
they have internet access.
• Concurrent access: multiple users can work on the online service and tools at the same time.
What are the benefits of online collaborative tools
- Shared files and calendars
- Reduced travel expense
- Ease of communication
- Enhanced teamwork
- Global access
What are the risks associated with using
online collaborative tools
- Unauthorized access to share files
- Insufficient management of version control
- Malware threats
- Identity/data theft
- Service interruptions
What are the cloud service models?
• Software as a Service(SaaS) -The Cloud provider hosts applications and makes them available to end users over the Internet – Google apps, dropbox, slack
• Platform as Service -The Cloud provider delivers a platform to customers so they can develop, run, and manage software applications without the need to build and maintain the underlying infrastructure themselves.
• Infrastructure as Service -The Cloud provider offers essential compute, storage, and networking resources on demand – Digital Ocean, AWS

Give examples of cloud platforms
- Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Microsoft Azure
- Google cloud
- Heroku
What are the typical features of cloud?
- On-demand self-service - the network administrator can
buy additional computing resource - Broad network access - access available using a wide
variety of client devices, such as PCs, laptops, tablets,
and smartphones - Resource pooling - computing capacity is shared among
all its customers and can be assigned and reassigned based on customer demand - Rapid elasticity - resource allocation to customers can quickly expand or contract with demand
- Measured service - resource usage can be easily controlled, reported, and billed to provide full visibility to
both the Cloud service provider and customer
What are the benefits of cloud computing?
- Reduced cost – users only pay for the IT services they need, at
the time they need it; without the expense of owning and maintaining software and hardware - Enhanced mobility – tools, apps and files are available anytime, anywhere there is internet access.
- Scalability – Users/Companies can increase or decrease the size of their subscription, and always pay for what they need.
- Automatic updates – The cloud provider will keep the tools and services up to date and therefore users will always have access to latest versions of any programs they subscribe to.
- Quick way of communication among members.
- Better disaster recovery since data or information is off-site.
