Lab Notes Flashcards
Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT)
The movement of genetic information laterally between organisms that occurs without the involvement of sexual reproduction
Protoza
Classified into four major groups
-Flagellates
-Amoebas
-Ciliates
-Sporozoa
Protozoa: Kinetoplastida
Is a flagellated protozoa that has a kinetoplast that contains a large amount of DNA
Parasitic and free-living
Kinetoplast
Circular DNA inside a mitochondrion
Trypomastigotes
Slender body, undulating membrane, flagellum present and kinetoplast posterior to the nucleus
Amastigotes
Small, Oval, no flagellum, kinetoplast close to nucleus
Promastigotes
Elongate with free flagellum and no undulating membrane, kinetoplast and flagellum anterior to nucleus
Epimastigotes
Elongate with undulating membrane and flagellum emerging from side of the cell near the nucleus
