Lab II - Species Identification and Systematics Flashcards
Kingdom
A broad taxonomic category made up of related phyla. Many biologists currently assign living organisms to 5 kingdoms and several “supergroups.”
Phylum
A taxonomic grouping of related, similar classes; a category beneath the kingdom and above the class.
Class
A taxonomic category made up of related orders.
Order
A taxonomic group made up of related families.
Family
A taxonomic group made up of related genera.
Genus
A taxonomic category made up of related species.
Species
According to the biological species concept, one or more populations whose members are capable of interbreeding in nature to produce fertile offspring and do not interbreed with members of other species.
Dichotomous key
A key useful for identifying species of organisms unknown to you. At each step, you make a choice between two options until you arrive at an answer
Systematics
The study of the kind and the diversity of organisms and of any and all relationships among them.
o-The scientific study of the diversity of organisms and their evolutionary relationships.
Taxonomy
An aspect of systematics; the science of naming, describing, and classifying organisms.
Phylogram
A tool that reveals which species descended from other species, or which species share immediate common ancestors.
Homologous
Similarity in different species that results from their derivation from a common ancestor. The features that exhibit such similarity are called homologous features.
