Lab Exercise 9-10: Kingdom Protista Flashcards
Define: phycology
the study of algae
Define: holozoic
obtaining nourishment by feeding on other plants & animals (eat whole organisms)
Define: trophozoite
active, feeding, multiplying stage of most protozoa
Define: cyst
-a resting or dormant stage of a microorganism
-helps the organism to survive in unfavorable environmental conditions.
-Giardia lamblia
Know which ones are algae and which are protozoa
PROTOZOA: Giardia, Trichomonas, Trypanosoma, Amoeba, Plasmodium, Paramecium
ALGAE: Desmids, Diatoms, Ceratium,
Protozoa are generally separated by how they move – do you know who moves by cilia?
(or flagella? or pseudopodia?)
Flagella: Trichomonas,
Pseudopodia: Amoeba,
Know which organisms are pathogens and the disease they cause
Trypanosoma
-T. cruzi (chaga’s ❤️disease)
-T. brucei ( African sleeping sickness)
Plasmodium (malaria)
Trichomonas (STI)
Describe the life cycle of Plasmodium and the characteristics of malaria
- infected mosquito w/malaria bites human
- gets into liver may infect RBC’s, ↓ O2
(asexual reproduction-intermediate host) - RBC’s explode & release babies cause fever
- Another mosquito bites human (definitive host- sexual reproduction)
