LAB Connective tissue Flashcards
what is connective tissue?
provides support and protection while connecting various tissues and organs to one another
areolar connective tissue?
contains both collagen and elastic fibers
hypodermis
collagen fibers?
composed of the protein collagen, tough and resistant to stretching
elastic fibers?
composed of the protein elastin, provide strength and stretching capacity
reticular fibers?
composed of collagen and glycoprotein, supporting network
adipose connective tissue?
found wherever areolar tissue is found. good insulator and major energy reserve.
(hypodermis)
dense regular connective tissue?
abundance of collagen fibers in parallel bundles with fibroblasts
(tendons)
dense irregular connective tissue?
collagen fibers are irregularly arranged. found in parts of the body where pulling forces are exerted in various directions
(white of eyeball)
what is cartilage?
consists of a dense network of collagen and elastic fibers embedded in chondroitin sulfate. has no blood vessels or nerves.
hyaline cartilage?
Provides flexibility, support, reduces friction & absorbs shock
(trachea)
lacunae?
the spaces the cells are in
elastic cartilage?
Consists of chondrocytes in a threadlike network of elastic fibers. more lacunae and less matrix volume
(ear)
bone tissue?
Protects, provides for movement, stores minerals, site of blood cell formation. consists of a matrix containing mineral salts, collagen fibers and cells called osteocytes.
lamellae?
rings of the mineralized matrix
Canaliculi?
little canals containing osteocytes that provide routes for nutrient and waste transport.
central canal?
contains blood vessels and nerves.
