lab: brain + eye Flashcards
source of cerebral spinal fluid
produced in the choroid plexuses of the ventricles of the brain
function: longitudingal fissure
the deep groove that separates the two hemispheres of the vertebrate brain.
gyri and sulci
a gyrus (pl. gyri) is a ridge on the cerebral cortex. It is generally surrounded by one or more sulci (depressions or furrows
remember: sulci, sad, depression
cerebrum location + function
biggest chunk of brain.
responsible for all higher brain functions:
- speech
- memory
- reasoning
- emotions
- motor functions
cerebellum function and location
provide smooth progression of movements
its the big, circular blob near the spinal cord
point out where the medualla is on a brain and give its funciton
brainstem
The medulla oblongata helps regulate breathing, heart and blood vessel function, digestion, sneezing, and swallowing. This part of the brain is a center for respiration and circulation. Sensory and motor neurons (nerve cells) from the forebrain and midbrain travel through the medulla.
point out hippocampus
point out hypothalamus
location and function: olfactory bulb
sends olfactory information to be further processed in the amygdala, the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the hippocampus where it plays a role in emotion, memory and learning.
optic nerve location and function
The job of the optic nerve is to transfer visual information from the retina to the vision centers of the brain via electrical impulses
optic chiasma structure / function
the X-shaped structure formed at the point below the brain where the two optic nerves cross over each other.
location mammillary body (sheep)
pons location and function
bulb above the medulla
function:
This region of the brainstem includes neural pathways that conduct signals from the brain down to the cerebellum/medulla, and tracts that carry the sensory signals up into the thalamus.
The pons contains nuclei that relay signals from the forebrain to the cerebellum, along with nuclei that deal primarily with sleep, respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensation, and posture.
oculomotor nerve location
3rd cranial nerve after: olfactory, optic
hypophysis (pituitary) location
