Lab 7 Flashcards
What are the 3 types of mutations?
Substitution (also known as point mutation), deletion and insertion
What is a substitution mutation
One base is replaced with a nother
What is a deletion mutation
One or more bases are deleted
What is an insertion mutation
One or more bases are inserted
What is it called when the entire amino acid sequence shifts due to deletion or insertion
Frame Shift
What does degenerate mean in codon sequence
There is a certain redundancy built into the genetic code
What is a synonymous mutation?
Those that change the sequence of a codon but does not change their meaning
What is an introns
Intros are from the gene map, and after splicing, are removed from mRNA. Non-coding sequences
What is an exons
Extrons are the actual codons for the mRNA and Protein. The protein coding sequences for many genes are broken into smaller pieces of coding sequences.
How do you make an mRNA map?
1.) 5’ Cap
2.) 1- 1st number on CDS, 5’ untranslated region
3.) 1st CDS # to last CDS #
4.) Last CDS # to end of mRNA #, 3’ untraslated region
5.) 3’ Cap
6.) Poly A tail
How do you see the secondary structure?
The pink boxes are alpha helix secondary strucuture
The yellow boxes are beta sheet secondary strucuture
How do you see the amount of polypeptide chains
Under Chains section, each letter A, B,C is a separate polypeptide chain
