All incubated at 35C.
Is a direct smear performed on eye specimens?
Yes, a direct smear.
PMNs - 10X
Bacteria & yeast - 100X
How do quantitate eye specimen culture plates?
Semi-quantitate
What are the major pathogens for conjuntivitis?
N. gonorrhea
Chlamydia trachomatis (serotypes D to K)
H. influenzae
S. pneumoniae
S. aureus
Strep. Group A
Moraxella lacunata
Corynebacterium macginleyi
Syphilis (Treponema pallidum)
What are the major pathogens for Keratitis?
S. aureus
S. pneumoniae
P. aeruginosa
GC
Acinetobacter spp.
Herpes simplex virus,
Fungus
Acanthamoeba (parasite)
Does the eyes have a normal flora?
Not really, in theory they are sterile.
Transient flora (from skin in small amounts):
S. auerus
Corynebacterium spp.
Cutibacterium acnes,
S. epidermis,
Streptococcus spp.
Do conjunctival swabs get AST performed on them?
Not routinely as antibiotics tests for AST are meant for medications that are distributed through blood.
What are critical conditions that require critical reporting and AST?
Organisms that cause endophthalmitis and Keratitis.
