Q

How are the culture plates read and worked up?

A
  1. Est. qty and describe morphology on each plate.
  2. Identify potential pathogens, usually 3-4+ growth, perform standard tests. Correlate with gram stained smear.
  3. Perform AST on applicable organisms.

Q

What should the final report contain for a positive culture on an ear specimen?

A
  1. Report qty and morph of all organisms on gram smear, PMNs.
  2. Report qty and organisms ID for each morph type isolated on culture media with susceptibilities.
  3. Note possible contaminants as “XX amount” of indigenous flora present, possible contamination.
