Lab 5: Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
Body’s major regulatory and coordinating systems. Seat of all mental activity (eg consciousness, memory, thinking).
How does nervous system maintain homeostasis?
By detecting, interpreting, and responding to change in internal and external conditions.
How many layers of meninges does a brain have and what are they called?
Three. Dura matter (outer), Arachnoid (middle), Pia matter (inner).
Difference between observed arachnoid and pia matter?
Arachnoid does not dip into grooves like pia matter.
Name of fissure between cerebral hemispheres?
Longitudinal fissure.
What is the corpus callosum?
Thick transverse band of fibres, connest cerebral hemispheres.
What is the cross seen anterior to hypothalamus?
Optic chiasma (crossing of optic nerves).
What is the infundibulum?
Connection between (posterior) pituitary and hypothalamus.
What is the pons primarily composed of?
White fibres.
STUDY THE DIAGRAMS.
GO DO IT!
What are neurotransmitters? Examples?
Chemicals that trigger impulse to travel across synapse which will enable impulse to reach next nerve fibre. Eg amino acids, acetylcholine, adenosine, peptides.
Know diagram of reflex arc.
Do you know it?
Know diagram of the brain.
Do you know it?
What is cauda equina syndrome?
Serious disorder resulting from compression of cauda equina - bundle of nerve roots that lie below spinal cord in vertebral column. Caused by narrowing of spinal canal. May result in paralysis of legs and uncontrollable bowel and bladder if no surgery.
Function of frontal lobe?
Reasoning, planning, speech, movement, emotions, problem solving.
Function of parietal lobe?
Associated w/ movement, orientation, recognition, preception of stimuli.
Function of temporal lobe?
Perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, speech
Function of occipital lobe?
Visual processing.
