Lab 5 - Endocrine Flashcards
1
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- controls the anterior pituitary through the release of tropic hormones
- secretion of anterior pituitary hormones is stimulated by tropic hormones from the hypothalamus
2
Q
Negative Feedback Loop of Thyroid Hormone Pathway
A
- hypothalamus –> anterior pituitary –> thyroid gland
- TRH –> TSH –> T4 and T3
- if TSH levels are low, the hypothalamus will increase the release of TRH
3
Q
Thyroid Hormone
A
hyperthyroidism: associated with increase in production of T3 and T4
- higher hormone secretion sees increase in BMR
4
Q
Rat Experiment
A
5
Q
Insulin
A
- released when high glucose levels
- gluconeogenesis forms glycogen from glucose
- alpha cells produce glucagon (catabolic)
- beta cells produce insulin (anabolic)
6
Q
Type 1 Diabetes
A
- no insulin produced due to beta cell destruction
- “juvenile” childhood onset
- large genetic component
7
Q
Type 2 Diabetes
A
- cells are resistant to insulin
- result in impaired insulin receptor function
- usually adult onset, although incident is increasing in young adults and children
- genetic component but major role in lifestyle factors
