Lab 3: the basal ganglia Flashcards
The common Carotid Artery
Splits into an external and an internal
the vertebral artery
Branches into the basilar artery
what forms the circle of willis
the basilar and the internal carotid
Anterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery (AICA)
is the separation off the basilar artery on the medulla
The pontine arteries
Small branches of the basilar on top of the pons
Superior Cerebellar Artery
First branch of the basilar on after the pons
supplies the cerebellum
Posterior Cerebral Artery
the 2nd branch of the basilar after the pons
Middle cerebral artery
-Branches off the circle of willis near where the carotid artery comes in.
-80 Percent of Strokes occur here due to the quick change in size of the arteries
Branches of the middle cerebral artery
1) lenticulostrate arteries
- very small near internal capsule
2) MCA superior
3) MCA inferior
MCA sections
M1: stem: massive stroke involving ventriculo-straite arteries, thalamus, and basal ganglia
M2: sylvian
M3: cortical superior and inferior
what lobes does the MCA flow too
frontal, temporal and parietal as while as the deep structures of the brain
Contents of the Basal Ganglia
1) Caudate Nucleus
2) Putamen
3) globus
4) Subthalamic nucleus
5) substantia nigra
Purpose of the basal ganglia
1) Helps with vision and motion
2) Makes emotion and movement more seamless
3) Provides motivation for movement
