What should a pt be looking for when inspecting their skin?
Color changes, skin temp, edema, corns and calluses, blisters, dryness and cracking, pain, redness lasting for greater than 20 minutes
What are skin hygiene considerations for wearing a prosthesis?
Daily wash in lukewarm water with fragrance free soap, pat dry, shower at nighttime, small amount of fragrance free lotion to lubricate skin, toenail care, skin inspection
Should a pt with a prosthesis use petroleum based lotion?
No because it may interfere with the suspension
What should a pt with a prosthesis avoid when considering their skin care?
Chemical agents and fragrances, bare feet, extreme temperatures, weight bearing on blistered foot
What are examples of sensory desensitization?
Massage, toweling
What modalities can be used for sensory desensitization?
Massage, ultrasound, ice, TENS, non-narcotic analgesics, biofeedback, guided imagery, psychotherapy, nerve blocks, mirror therapy
What is the socket?
Interface between the residual limb and prosthesis
What is the most common socket for a transfemoral?
Ischial containment
What is the most common socket for a transtibial?
TSB or PTB
